MBABANE – Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO) President Mduduzi ‘Gawuzela’ Simelane arrived in South Africa (SA) quietly, without the usual security detail and media attention.

Simelane, a former Member of Parliament, was part of his organisation’s leadership plenum attended by over 70 leaders of the organisation from both the national and international structures.

The event was held at the Confederation of Trade Union (COSATU) offices at Braamfontein over the weekend, beginning Saturday.

In an interview, he said coming quietly was intentional, to ensure that no unnecessary attention from naysayers is drawn to the meeting.

“I decided to come and be with the leaders physically, although they were all not aware of my coming. Not even one of them knew I would arrive.”

Quietly

He said his safety and security were the main reason for coming in quietly.

“If I had announced my coming, the regime in Eswatini would have sprung to action to try and disturb the meeting,” he said.

Simelane last came to SA in November last year, where he addressed his supporters and other invited guests at KaMhlushwa, in the Mpumalanga Province of SA.

His visit saw men armed with rifles protecting his every move.

Meanwhile, COSATU House has also accommodated smaller gatherings such as the Communist Party of Swaziland (CPS) and the People’s United Democratic Movements (PUDEMO) in the past.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of SWALIMO Ramza Matimela thanked all who attended the meeting.

“SWALIMO, as a mass-based and democratic organisation, gathered this weekend for a plenum that informed the declaration made.

Dedication

“For 2025, as a year of mass action, we thank all leaders sitting on the National General Council (NGC) for their time and dedication to the advancement of our revolution, a special thanks to the president who came all the way from the UK to witness the occasion on a warm blood understand financial constraints and other potential threats upon his life.”
