MEN CALL FOR COMPULSORY DNA TESTS
MBABANE – Suddenly, men have come forward to express their views on the contentious issue of raising children they have not fathered.
This follows a post on Facebook and Senator Tony Sibandze’s submission in Parliament this week during the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office annual Performance Report in the Senate. Senator Sibandze raised concerns regarding children being raised by males who are not their biological fathers.
Essentially, Sibandze stated that women have the responsibility to ensure that the rightful father of a child takes responsibility and that they should not deceive or pressure men into maintaining children they did not father.
Teaching
“What direction is the country taking and what are we teaching the nation? “If everyone affected must contribute, it raises the question of being a toll gate,” he said. Sibandze emphasised that this is a very serious matter as it occurs in our communities. He added that traditional chiefs deliberate on such issues weekly in their chiefdoms. “While we pass the Deputy Prime Minister’s office report, the office must, however, address this societal problem,” he remarked, imploring both women and men in the country to conduct themselves appropriately to avoid the situation of raising someone else’s child.
“A child must be fed and raised by their biological father. “If the father disappears or neglects his duties, his sins must not be passed on to another person,” he stated. Sibandze praised the overall report from the Deputy Prime Minister’s office, particularly regarding the initiative to build houses for the elderly.
Positive
“Such initiatives present a positive image for the country,” he added. Following Sibandze’s submission in Parliament, men took to Facebook to share their opinions, with one stating: “Government must craft a law that makes DNA testing a necessity after birth. If every child undergoes a DNA test, many will find themselves without fathers.” A DNA paternity test is a scientific procedure that uses DNA analysis to determine if a man is the biological father of a child by comparing the child’s DNA with that of the alleged father.
“Compulsory DNA testing must be provided by government,” another individual posted on Facebook. Another commented: “The sad reality is that some women are genuinely unsure of a child’s biological father, but if a man discovers the true paternity of the child, the woman should face arrest.”
Another post encouraged Senator Sibandze to advocate for a law that would make DNA testing compulsory and provided by government.
“We are tired of being forced to raise children that are not ours,” he expressed.
“The only solution is to make DNA testing affordable, as many men cannot afford the E3 000 or more fee. “Even married men face this issue, thinking those children are theirs simply because they were born in wedlock, when in fact they are not,” another user stated. In a bizarre post, another individual mentioned that in some cases, a child has five or more fathers.
“I have witnessed this with one of my neighbours where a child has five birth certificates and on Monday, I overheard someone lamenting who is going to reimburse him for his money. “This is painful,” the post continued.“Government must provide free DNA testing in public hospitals,” another user insisted. On another note, a woman stated that society should also consider allowing women to choose to give their children their own surnames if the person they slept with is unwilling to father the child.
Importance
“As long as men continue to overlook the importance of conducting DNA tests after a baby is born, this issue will remain unresolved,”
another remarked. Another contributor suggested that this situation arises from having multiple sexual partners. He stated that those who engage in sexual activities with more than one partner within a single month will inevitably struggle to determine the true father of the child at conception.
“One more reason is financial instability, which affects a large portion of the population,” another wrote.
“Implementing DNA testing before issuing a birth certificate should be established as a law. In that way, no man can find himself maintaining a child he did not father,” another suggested.
