KING URGES EU, UK ENVOYS TO EMBRACE ‘NKWE’
LOZITHA – King Mswati III has expressed Eswatini’s rapid progress, likening it to a ‘bee under the Nkwe spirit’, to EU Ambassador Karsten Mecklenburg and UK High Commissioner Colin Wells.
This statement was made during a ceremony at Lozitha Palace where the King received their letters of credence. He urged the ambassadors to adopt this ‘Nkwe spirit’ to enhance collaborative efforts in various sectors. The King acknowledged the EU and UK’s significant contributions to Eswatini’s development, highlighting poverty alleviation and job creation programmes that have positively impacted communities.

“As we work together we hope that you will also adopt the Nkwe spirit in order to achieve a lot for the benefit of our countries, regions and people,” the King said. The King also addressed global conflicts, advocating for dialogue as a resolution, drawing parallels with Eswatini’s own conflict-resolution practices. “If countries of the world can learn and adopt this spirit (dialogue), the world can live in peace,” the King said. High Commissioner Wells emphasised the enduring relationship between the UK and Eswatini, rooted in shared language, principles and values. He noted the UK’s commitment to supporting Eswatini through initiatives like the Chevening Scholarship Scheme and highlighted the King’s own UK education.
Wells outlined three key areas of focus: fostering economic growth, promoting British business and innovation in Eswatini and working with Eswatini on governance and trade standards, including women’s and girls’ rights. He expressed a desire to increase UK economic engagement, potentially including a UK presence at the Eswatini Trade Fair. “Indeed, you and I have a shared affinity for the beautiful south-west of England where we both studied at the same time, in schools only a few miles apart,” the high commissioner said.
