Phakathi is new PUDEMO chief
MBABANE - With PUDEMO President Mario Masuku behind bars, the organisation now has a new leader, South Africa-based Sikhumbuzo Phakathi.
Phakathi is the new Deputy President of the People’s Democratic Movement (PUDEMO) having been elected during the organisation’s extra-ordinary Congress held at the Kwazulu Natal University, South Africa about three weeks ago.
The relatively young Phakathi takes over the position of Vice President after Dr Gabriel Mkhumane who was tragically killed in April last year.
Interestingly, even though PUDEMO is an officially declared terrorist group in Swaziland, the South African government continues to host the party and its equally banned youth league, the Swaziland Youth Congress (SWAYOCO), in their country for their special meetings.
Information gathered is that PUDEMO met to reconstruct its leadership and elected people to fill the positions of Vice President, Treasurer, Deputy Secretary General as well as additional member.
Jerome Shongwe was elected Treasurer and took over from long-serving Vusi Mnisi who relocated to Mozambique while Wonder Mkhonta was elected Deputy Secretary General and replaced lawyer Stuki Mamba, and ex -miners President Ndlavela Dlamini replaced Mamgobhozi Vilakati as an additional member of PUDEMO’s Central Executive Committee (CEC)," said a source close to the organisation.
PUDEMO Chief Political Commissar Vincent Dlamini confirmed the new membership.
Phakathi has grown through the ranks of PUDEMO having started his political activism as Secretary General of the Swaziland Students Association (SAS) and SWAYOCO Secretary General while at the University of Swaziland and later became the PUDEMO Gauteng Secretary before being elected Vice President.
Dr Ray Russon, Dr Jabulani Matsebula, Lawyer and Magistrate Kush Vilakati and recently Dr Gabriel Mkhumane have in the past held the position of Vice President in PUDEMO.
