DJ Sbu's girlfriend killed herself after testing positive

Damoyi committed suicide in July 2005 by hanging herself in a room at Palazzo Hotel in Fourways, Johannesburg.

She was 26 years old.

Circumstances around her suicide remained a mystery until this week when the Thursday publication of the Sowetan newspaper revealed this shocking story.

Sources close to investigations into her death said she took an overdose of ARV tablets before hanging herself.

At the time of her death she was on ARVs, another source told the Sowetan newspaper this week.

Sowetan also established that Damoyi became depressed after learning of her HIV status thus opted to end her life. Sources said she left a suicide note in which she requested that DJ Sbu not attend her funeral.

In the same note she thanked the TV and award-winning YFM DJ for the good times they had together.

DJ Sbu, whose real name is Sibusiso Leope, undertook public HIV tests early this year and the results were negative.

Although the couple lived together in Dainfern, an exclusive suburb in northern Johannesburg, the YFM DJ has not said a word about the death of a woman he was set to marry.

Yesterday his business partner, Thembinkosi Nciza said DJ Sbu did not have authority to comment on the issue, as he was not married to Damoyi. "We don’t want to entertain it."

Damoyi checked into the hotel on July 29, 2005 and put up a "Do not disturb" sign on the door.

When her body was found three days later, the only other expenses she had incurred at the hotel were for four fruit juices from the mini bar in her room.
