Jilted man burns his lover, hangs himself
KAKHOZA – In a horrifying domestic violence incident, a jilted man doused his want-away lover with petrol and set her on fire before killing himself.
Phumzile Pamela Dlamini, a textile worker, is currently fighting for her life at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital.
She was attacked on her return from work at Matsapha Industrial Sites.
The 31-year-old Mduduzi Mabuza later committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree. The incident that has shocked the community of this area happened at around 6.30pm.
Neighbours speaking to the Times said Phumzile had just ended her relationship with Mabuza about two weeks ago, by telling him she no longer loved him, for deserting her when she was sick recently.
The ex-boyfriend is said to have managed to get a duplicate key to Phumzile’s flat in which he placed a two-litre container filled with petrol.
When she returned from work on Tuesday she was surprised to find a two litre container inside her flat.
“As she was talking to one of her neighbours inside her flat, Mduduzi came in and the female neighbour left.
“The neighbour sensed that something could go wrong and she called the police. While she was doing so, she saw flames coming from Phumzile’s flat,” said Hletiphi Sigwane.
The neighbour, Thuli Sigwane, is said to have rushed to open the door to the flat and Phumzile came out running in flames and headed for a nearby homestead.
They helped put out the flames and gave her first aid before she was rushed to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital where she is presently recuperating.
After setting Phumzile alight, Mabuza bolted from the scene and headed for his home at Mhobodleni where he lives with another woman.
This woman, with whom he has two children, told the police that he came and took a rope then left without saying where he was going.
It was not until morning that a search party, including the local community policemen, found him dangling from a mango tree.
Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Inspector Stephen Dlamini confirmed the incident and said the Manzini police were investigating three cases of arson, attempted murder and suicide.
