MANZINI – Police made a major breakthrough when they arrested one of the six suspects who staged an early morning robbery at Pigg’s Peak Police Station and stole E6.2 million last month.

Mkhulu Dlamini (40) of Mbelebeleni in the Shiselweni region is currently detained at Mbabane Police Station.

Dlamini was arrested on Thursday after he surrendered himself to the police. He was handed over to the police by his lawyer, Mduduzi Mabila. This was at the Mbabane Police Station before proceeding to the Hhohho Regional Headquarters. Dlamini is said to have reported to Mabila that he wanted to spill the beans about the robbery after a deal that went sour.

"Apparently, he claimed to have been let down by his partners, who gave him a share he felt he did not deserve. He then decided that other than perpetually fleeing from the police, it was imperative for him to surrender himself," said an informant, who is very closer to the issue.

Dlamini is said to have claimed to have received only E500 000 of the loot, which irked him and made him believe that he was being fooled.

When he surrendered himself, police are said to have quickly launched intensive investigations.

On Friday, they took him to Mshingishingini area, about 20km north of Pigg’s Peak Town where he was expected to show the police some of the exhibits of the case.

Firearms

These include the firearms that were taken by the suspects during the robbery.

By lunchtime on Friday, the investigating officers were almost done for the day and were getting a briefing from their superiors.

It could not be immediately ascertained as to what exhibits they had retrieved through Dlamini’s help.

When Mabila was sought for comment on how the suspect approached him, he preferred to reserve his comment.

"It happened on Thursday but I can’t say much on the issue, at least for now," was all he could say.

Police were still looking for the other suspects, some of whom are said to be out of the country.

The alleged robbers pounced on unsuspecting police officers at the police station and pretended as if they had brought a suspected cellphone thief.

They allegedly produced guns and ordered the officers to take their orders. They then helped themselves to the money, which was kept in a safe.

At least E5.8m of the money was to be used to pay social grants for the elderly in the Hhohho region, while E400 000 belonged to a women’s organisation and E16 000 was government money from the Revenue Offices.

After the robbery, the thugs left in a white Isuzu van that bore no registration numbers and also stole a police vehicle. The van was later found abandoned near Ndzingeni.

Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Inspector Stephen Dlamini said the suspect appeared yesterday before Magistrate Siphosini Dlamini. He was remanded to custody and is expected make another appearance today.

 ... surrender, suspects advised

MANZINI – Police have advised the other suspects in the E6.2 million armed robbery, which occurred at Pigg’s Peak Police Station last month, to surrender themselves just like Mkhulu Dlamini, who handed himself in on Thursday.

Police Assistant PRO Stephen Dlamini said it was pointless for the suspects to keep hiding from the police because they would eventually be caught.

"This suspect did very well. He knew that the long arm of the law would eventually catch up with him and handed himself in. The rest should do that," he said.

Dlamini (40) of Mbelebeleni in the Shiselweni region surrendered himself on Thursday after consultations with his lawyer, Mduduzi ‘Tsotsi’ Mabila.

The police assistant spokesperson said Dlamini was in South Africa when he took the decision to cross over and surrender himself.

His is currently working closely with the police from the Serious Crimes Unit, also known as Lukhozi, who have launched intensive investigations.

The police said no other arrests had been made even after a raid that was conducted at Mshingishingini in the Hhohho region.

‘Tsotsi’ to represent E6.2m robbery suspect

MANZINI – Popular Mbabane-based attorney Mduduzi ‘Tsotsi’ Mabila will represent Mkhulu Dlamini, who is the first suspect who has been arrested in connection with the E6.2m robbery which occurred at Pigg’s Peak Police Station last month.

Mabila said Dlamini had always been his client and chances were that he would represent him in this case.

"A person has a right to choose his or her lawyer, but as things stand, I will be representing him," he said.

Mabila said since Dlamini had been consulting with him, it was for this reason that he decided to contact him when he took the decision to hand himself over to the police.

He confirmed that the suspect came to him and he accompanied him to the Mbabane Police Station, where he is currently booked.

The suspect is expected to appear at the Mbabane Magistrate’s Court, where he is likely to apply for bail.

MPs overjoyed about arrest

MANZINI – Members of Parliament were over the moon with joy when they learnt about the arrest of one of the suspects in the E6.2 million robbery.

The MPs said this was a clear indication that prayers were working wonders for people who strongly believed in God.

Deputy Speaker Esther Dlamini, who is also Mbabane East MP, said she was worried that if such a huge amount of money would disappear without trace and the suspects not caught, it would set a bad precedence.

"The news you’ve just relayed to me relieve me. I was worried about the money. The act was a clear sign that some people are not concerned about the king’s efforts to eradicate poverty in the country," she said.

Dlamini said she was grateful for the breakthrough because it would cleanse the name of the police service.

Mahlangatsha MP Musa Norman Ngcobo said they were worried about this issue because it involved a lump sum of money. He said his wish was that the police get to the bottom of it.

"It is true that the police will have to step up their investigations and operations but we are very happy with what they have done on this issue," he said.

Ngcobo said it was now incumbent on parliamentarians to enact tough laws that will ensure that perpetrators of such heinous crimes spend time in jail so that would-be offenders refrain from crude acts.

Kwaluseni MP Sibusiso ‘Mabhanisi said he was hopeful that after the arrest, the law will take its full course.

"There should be more arrest so that these people are made an example to others who may think about committing such crimes," he said.

Dlamini said if it calls, the perpetrators should rot in jail.

Why suspect surrendered

MANZINI – Different stories have emerged about the reasons why the E6.2 million suspect, Mkhulu Dlamini, decided to surrender himself to the police.

The first version is that he was bitter about the deal that went sour after he was given a meagre amount of money from the E6.2 million that was stolen during an early morning robbery at the Pigg’s Peak Police Station last month.

Information gathered from close sources was that he got about E500 000, which he felt was not a fair share.

Another insider said Dlamini claimed he was given only E40 000, something that irked him.

His lawyer Mduduzi ‘Tsotsi’ Mabila, said the suspect decided to hand himself in because he got information to the effect that police were seriously looking for him.
