MBABANE - The public still does not have faith in the Mbabane Government Hospital’s Ward 18.

Most have the perception that once a patient is admitted to the female ward, chances of that patient surviving are slim.

Zanele Nkambule of Elangeni is one of these.

She never thought she would survive after being told that she would be taken to Ward 18, which is a female medical ward.

Nkambule was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and was told that she would be admitted at the ward.

She told the Times SUNDAY on Wednesday that when she heard this, she feared for her life.

"I got scared when the nurse told me that she would be taking me to Ward 18," she said.

"As soon as she told me this, I negotiated with the nurse to be allowed to go to another. I did not want to be admitted to that ward. She asked me the reason and I told her that I didn’t think I was too ill."

Nkambule said the nurse first told her that there was no other ward she could be taken to as the others were full.

"She then told me that she was aware that most people did not like the ward because they thought that once admitted there, they would not get better. She advised me not to be negative but have faith that I would get better and be discharged the next day." She said another thing that made her resist at first was that she had once been admitted to the same ward and knew what people thought of the patients in it.

"The first time I was admitted, other patients were sleeping on the floor and the ward was overcrowded," she said.

"I was taken to another ward then, as most of the patients were too sick.

When they told me this time around that I would be taken to the same ward, I lost hope. I didn’t want to be in the same situation I was in the last time."

Nkambule was amazed when she got to the ward to discover that the nurses were trying their best to take care of patients. "Some beds were empty and the ward itself was clean," she said.

"The nurse then took me to my bed and told me that they had been trying to give special attention to all the patients in the ward. She said when I left this place, I would be better and my view of it would change."

Nkambule said she was feeling better and hoped to be discharged as soon as possible.

"People should not be afraid to go into this ward as it is not what it used to be," she said.

She said most of the patients were happy because of the proper treatment and care they were getting.

Proud staff and happy patients

MBABANE – The Times SUNDAY reporters took a tour of the dreaded ward.

Present were Mthembeni Maseko, Mbabane Government Hospital’s Customer Care Officer (CCO) and Khetsiwe Dlamini, the Senior Nursing Sister.

Notably, the floor and walls were clean.

There were also dustbins placed along the corridor of the ward.

The dustbins are used by the patients to throw rubbish.

Some of the beds were empty because some of patients had already been discharged.

Maseko said they have been trying by all means to keep the ward clean.

"I believe the patients are happy with the reception they are getting from the nurses and their assistance," she said.

Meanwhile, Dlamini said the perception that people died when taken into this ward was a thing of the past.

"Before, people had that mentality but now everything has changed," she said.

"As you can see, the ward is clean. It is always like this."

Meanwhile, most patients said they were happy with the care and treatment they were getting from the nurses.

Elsie Dlamini of Mangwaneni was among the patients who had a lot of good things to say about the ward.

She said after being admitted at the hospital on Monday, she was happy with the reception she got.

"The nurses are there for us at all times," she said.

"As you can see, I am now feeling better and know I will be fine in no time, so that I can go back home."
