MD Finally suspended!

MBABANE – Elijah Zwane, the Managing Director of troubled Swaziland Post and Telecommunications Corporation, was suspended yesterday.

In a statement released by Government Press Secretary Percy Simelane, he said the decision to put the MD on ice was taken by the SPTC Board.

Simelane said Zwane had been suspended ‘to allow for a smooth, detailed Forensic Audit".

Following Zwane’s suspension, Amon Dlamini, who is former SPTC General Manager –Operations, has been appointed acting MD.

Dlamini’s appointment, Simelane said, was with the concurrence of the Standing Committee of Public Enterprises (SCOPE).

Zwane’s suspension happened on an eventful day for SPTC where the corporation’s workers downed tools and marched to Cabinet’s offices to deliver a petition to Premier Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini over ongoing problems at the parastatal.

On the day, Zwane reported for work as usual and, as confirmed by impeccable sources, was in office the whole day without receiving correspondence of his suspension.

The news of his suspension only began filtering after 5pm.

However, on Monday, this publication learnt of Zwane’s pending suspension, hence in yesterday’s publication it was stated that he had been informed by a senior official of his pending fate.

Meanwhile, Simelane also confirmed the story run by the Times newspaper on Tuesday that Nelisiwe Mabuza had been fired as SPTC Board Chairperson.

He said: "Mabuza has been relieved of her duties by the Minister of ICT Winnie Magagula with the concurrence of SCOPE and did not resign as has been alleged."

Mabuza was dismissed after failing to carry out Cabinet directives on the impasse between SPTC and Swazi MTN.

The erstwhile chairperson also refused to attend a meeting with the ICT minister and Swazi MTN where it was expected that the directives were to be reiterated to her.

Simelane went on to affirm that Arthur Ngcobo had been appointed acting SPTC Board Chairman, also with the consensus of SCOPE.

Lutfo appointed to new committee

MBABANE –Minister Lutfo Dlamini has been appointed into a three member Cabinet committee to communicate with SPTC workers.

The Labour and Social Security Minister has been appointed together with Justice Minister Mgwagwa Gamedze and, ICT Minister Winnie Magagula.

Magagula, who is under fire from the SPTC employees, has been appointed convener of the committee.

Government Press Secretary Percy Simelane said the three ministers are going to liaise with the SPTC workers "in connection with the process that will see the corporation fulfil its mandate of efficient service delivery to the public".

It has also decided to appoint an internationally recognised forensic audit firm to probe the affairs of the Corporation. Some sources allege that this firm may be KPMG, but it could not be confirmed last night.

All this is done in the interest of ONLY FEW individuals who hold shares at MTN. Just goes to show that Swaziland is ruled by greed, they don't even care about the poor population. This is what keeps African countries and its people poor. African leaders are always concerned about the accumulation of their wealth, and not the welfare of the citizens. But all this will one day come to a halt. It has happened in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Where are these greedy leaders today?? One day the poeple of Swaziland will be free! A WISE MAN LEARNS FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS.                                                                                           Mar 29, 2012, 6:32 AM, Economist

Where is the telecomms regulator? Who is delaying the regulator issue-its the govt. Mps were banned from tendering and its time cabinet ministers are barred from owning shares from companies like MTN. Now i understand why MTN is a private company as opposed to a public company. The govt is the referee, supporting MTN since many of the cabinet members own shares @ MTN and SPTC is govt. parastatal - govt is everything here, so is doing what she feels like doing. To the MD resignation is the smart option, u r a man of intergrity after all- much respect my brother.

They are never satisfied! Why should the poor Swazis suffer because of the individuals who hold shares at MTN. Actually there is nothing that this company has done for the Swazis since its inception in the country beside giving people some soccer replicas. SPTC is a government entity which is supposed to be protected by Government but because the head of Government, the minister and other individuals have got shares in the rival company, the poor Swazis must suffer. But it wont be long before the "fields of England shall be trod by beasts alone" like in the Animal farm and that will be as a result of the cruelty that the head of government and his puppet cabinet are using to govern the country. There will come a time when the people are going to say enough is enough.

How i wish I was not a Swazi. Even Swazi born animals are feeling the pinch. Lafa elihle kakhulu. Ewu sekuyabona longetulu. As for me I have had enough with this kind of governance. I think now is the time for change in Swaziland, oh Come Lord Jesus and save us from this furnace. THANKS

I agree with all those who say it's all about greed. All the individuals making decisions in this issue have shares at MTN and this comes just after dividends have been paid, am sure the figures were slightly below expectations and the reason given was it's because of SPTC. My question now what happens to the employees who stand to lose their jobs because it is a known fact that SPTC will not survive on the fixed network revenue alone. In my opinion the true "mafia" has taken over but ngemusa wa Nkulunkulu ngeke baphumelele.

They can run but they cannot hide there is time when every thing will be in an open space seen by every citizen of the country. Those who give directives will one day chew those directives they give to other people. You can fool some people some times but you cannot fool all the times now we see the light we goner getup for the right.

Awu, manje kudlalwa ngale SPTC. Lutfo has failed to solve the scholarship impasse sotokhona loku? Cry the beloved country.

My brother Elijah, I support you. As the people who personally appointed you have seen it fit to now suspended you, I hope they don't raise the issue of your appointment into SPTC. These people have a way of telling the world how someone got there especially when they're angry at you. Siyakumpintjisa natsi. Nawe mpintja ngalapho. But lobuganu which we donated recently will come in handy now.

Am quite aghast about this whole issue, its now been politicised at the expense of us end users. SPTC was offering very affordable options and made communication way cheaper for the ordinary Swazi. Secondly, all the best of Swazi true leaders are shifted from prominent positions, you have the high court judge Masuku, the minister Rev., the chairman of the SPTC board, the illovo MD Mandla and then who is next. These are true leaders who effected change in our economy and society, but are now frustrated and will eventually be left with the leaders that will do what they are told. We will have ministers who carry out directives, and MD's who serve the only interests of those in power at the time.

: PREPAID WATER METERS
Do you think prepaid water meters will serve EWSC clients better than the current billing system?
