Swaziland gets E4m boost from Taiwan
MBABANE - The recent visit by Republic of China on Taiwan President Ying-Jeou Ma, has yielded good results as Swaziland has received a E4 million boost from that country’s embassy.
Following the president’s visit, the embassy donated a cheque and computers to government.
The presentation was made by the Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan Peter Tsai to the Minister of Economic Planning and Development Prince Hlangusemphi at the embassy yesterday.
He presented a cheque of E1 579 760, which will go towards the refurbishment of the Bio-technology Park into a site office and 300 desktop computers worth E2 442 300 to be used by different government ministries.
Making the presentation Ambassador Tsai said refurbishment of the Bio-Technology Park would save government a lot of money in future because there would be no need to construct temporary structures and it would also serve as the initial administration office once the project has been completed.
The Ambassador said he was pleased to note that both projects were not new but were ongoing projects which would benefit all Swazis once they were completed.
"This shows that the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan is Swaziland’s number one development partner, which is committed to the long term development of the kingdom," Tsai said.
He said he believed that through this kind of cooperation, the long term friendly and cordial relations between the two countries would be further strengthened and continue for more decades in the future.
Receiving the donation Prince Hlangusemphi said the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan has gone an extra mile in supporting the Bio-Technology Park project.
He said, this was not the first donation nor the last one.
He said the project was where it was today due to the continued support it has received from the Republic of China on Taiwan.
He noted that for the second time in a space of a year, ROC (Taiwan) had once again donated desktop computers.
This, he said was a very good initiative especially now that government was faced with serious fiscal challenges. He said the donation would be helpful in curbing this shortfall.
It’s a dream come true - Winnie
MBABANE - The Minister of Information Communication and Technology, Winnie Magagula, said the commencement of the Bio-Technology Park was a dream come true for the country.
She said Swaziland was grateful for the funding from the Republic of China on Taiwan in making his Majesty King Mswati III’s dream a reality.
She noted that biotechnology has many levels and developed countries like the United States of America, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea were on the extreme end of the continuum in as far as biotechnology is concerned. The minister said Swaziland as a developing country intended entering the fray from the very bottom and, therefore, needed to be careful about the use of the term biotechnology since it may not convey the same information to different people.
Furthermore, she thanked the continued assistance that the country has been receiving from the ROC (Taiwan). The minister said Swaziland achieved quite a lot in a short space of time in the strategy for the royal science technology park.
