MBABANE – Mystery surrounds the death of Vamile Gumbi, the Premier League of Swaziland’s (PLS) Accountant.

There are allegations that the police might have been involved in her death as she was allegedly interrogated before she became sick.

Gumbi died while undergoing treatment at the Mbabane Government Hospital last week Thursday. She had been in and out of hospital ever since she was taken in for questioning at the Mbabane Police Station. Gumbi was taken for questioning by the police after a sum of E3 800 went missing at the PLS Office situated at Sigwaca House.

The money, which was E5 000 in cash, was kept in a safe at the office. When the money went missing, the office was being used by three people who included Zwelonke ‘Sport’ Dlamini, Ncamsile Mkhonta, PLS Clerk and Gumbi. Gumbi discovered the following day and reported to Dlamini her immediate supervisor being Dlamini that only E1 200 was left in the safe. Dlamini questioned Gumbi if she had any idea where the money was but she said the last time she saw the money was when she put it in the safe. It was then decided that police should be involved in the matter. Gumbi was taken in for questioning at the Mbabane Police Station four days after the matter had been reported by Dlamini.

On the day she was taken in for questioning, she was driven to the police station by Viole Hillary, her sister. It is alleged that Gumbi was tortured to a point that she became unconscious.

Viole says she went to the police station later in the day to find out why Gumbi was still there because she had left her in the morning.

On her arrival at the police station, she found that her sister was in a critical condition. Viole then asked for a note allowing her sister to be taken in to hospital as she needed medical attention.

After meeting with the officer-in-charge, she then took Gumbi to hospital. Viole confirmed that she initially went to the police station to drop her sister earlier only to find her later in a critical condition.

She, however, asked not to disclose more details as the Gumbi family would be taking the matter up.

"This is a sensitive matter which we also want to talk about," she said. "However, this is not the best time to discuss the matter especially because my sister’s funeral is yet to be held." She had visited The Times Offices on Wednesday.

She insisted that the family wanted to give Gumbi all the respect she deserved and thereafter they would address the matter properly.

Asked what the doctors said was the cause of Gumbi’s death, Viole said the family had the doctor’s reports but asked not to talk about them up until Gumbi had been buried.

Gumbi was laid to rest yesterday morning at her parental home in Lubulini.

She wanted cops involved

MBABANE - The late Vamile Gumbi never regained strength after she was interrogated by the police.

This was revealed by Zwelonke ‘Sport’ Dlamini who was her immediate supervisor. Dlamini, who is the Premier League of Swaziland’s Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) told the Times SUNDAY that Gumbi was the one who suggested that the matter be reported to the police. This was after she had been questioned by Dlamini about the missing money.

Interviewed on Thursday afternoon, Dlamini confirmed that the matter was reported to the police. This was after Gumbi has suggested that since no one seemed to know where the money was, it was best that police officers be involved.

Dlamini also confirmed that Gumbi had not been well since she returned from being questioned by the police. "I cannot confirm that her death was as a result of the interrogation by the police," he said. "The only thing I can confirm is that she had not been well since the day she went for questioning." Dlamini said after he had reported the matter to the police, they came to the PLS office and took statements from everyone.

"I am not sure why the police then called Gumbi because I do not know how they conduct their investigations," he said. "I don’t know what happened at the police station. The only thing I know is that she brought the sick notes allowing her to be out of the office for sometime. We could not ask any questions because she was being attended to by doctors."

Dlamini said they did not suspect anything as the family only informed them that Gumbi had passed away. "I think the best thing is to talk to the family because they would be in a position to know all the details on what really happened," he said.

"The only thing we are aware of is that the theft case was reported to the police and we are not sure what happened at the police station."

: PREPAID WATER METERS
Do you think prepaid water meters will serve EWSC clients better than the current billing system?
