MANZINI – Two Mozam-bicans are alleged to have assaulted and killed a Swazi man in a xenophobic fight over a one-roomed flat.

The Mozambicans are alleged to have told the Swazi man that he was not wanted as a roommate at the Mahlabatsini flat.

One of the Mozambican men has been arrested for bludgeoning a Swazi man to death with an iron rod during a fight sparked by xenophobic connotations.

Information gathered from the scene of the crime was that the deceased identified as Sithembiso Malaza (37) was staying with the Mozambicans in a one-roomed house.

Neighbours said the number of Mozambicans occupying the room was however difficult to confirm as several of them frequented the room.

Member of the community police, Zweli Simelane, said it was not uncommon for him to mediate in disputes involving the Mozambicans who lived in the house.

"Today (yesterday) I gathered that the bone of contention was the continued stay of Malaza in the house. They had insisted that he should look for alternative accommodation because he was not a Mozambican.

"They expelled him from the house but he stood his ground, until they started exchanging slurs. This was when the violence broke out.

Malaza was allegedly hit with an iron rod on the back of the head and he lost consciousness."

Simelane said he was called to the homestead at about 7am yesterday where he found Malaza dead.

"I had to ensure that the Mozambican known as Vasco, who was implicated in hitting him with the iron rod did not leave the vicinity before the police arrived."

Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Inspector Khulani Mamba confirmed the incident and said one Mozambican was arrested in connection with the murder. "He will appear at the Manzini Magistrates Court tomorrow," he said.

Meanwhile, Malaza was identified as a resident of eMaphopheni, on the outskirts of Mafutseni.

It was gathered that he was looking for job opportunities while he earned a living from collecting scrap metal and selling the wares at the Matsapha Industrial Site.
