Umphakatsi house bombed
MATSAPHA – Prince Mahhawulane’s son escaped with minor injuries after the house he was sleeping in was allegedly petrol bombed by unknown people.
Prince Mahhawulane is a former Chief of Logoba he passed away in 2001. The incident happened at Logoba Royal Kraal in the early hours of Tuesday.
In an interview yesterday, the Prince’s son, Samkelo Dlamini (28) who is a Bachelor of Dairy Science student at the University of Swaziland, Luyengo Campus alleged that he was supposed to leave on Tuesday afternoon for Luyengo Campus but his journey was abandoned because the car that was supposed to ferry him did not arrive.
“Yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, I had been calling the driver of the car that was supposed to ferry me to Luyengo campus since the university will be opening soon but, at 7:30pm he did not answer his phone. I kept on calling him until 8pm when my phone’s battery died.”
“I then decided to go to bed and at about 11pm I woke up, switched on my phone and fortunately it turned on and I told myself that I will call my girlfriend in the early hours as I usually do. However, at 1:10am she called, but, when I was about to answer, the phone switched off due to a flat battery,” Dlamini alleged.
He alleged that after five minutes, he saw a shadow of a person passing by the main window and later heard a sound like that of water being spilled from a big container coming from the direction of the door. While I was wondering what that was all about that, I heard another bang coming from the other window’s direction and there was another sound of water being poured down the wall.
“I then decided to wake up because I realised that there was a big deal going on outside. When I got out of bed, there was a smell of petrol in the house. I at first shouted for help but, it dawned on me it would not help as no one would hear me. I then uttered a brief prayer asking God to accept my soul because it was clear that the people wanted me dead,” he claimed. Dlamini said he jumped out of the window as the house was already on fire. He said the people had escaped.
“I jumped out of the window naked and could only manage to grab a pair of trousers and I ran towards two nearby homesteads. I was attacked by dogs and moved to another homestead where I yelled for help. I was able to call one of my neighbours who responded immediately and I was taken inside his house.” He said the neighbours then went to the Royal Kraal and left him behind.
“Surprisingly, when they got to my house, they found an Inner Council member and a community policeman yelling for help, yet their homes are very far from my homestead. This raised some suspicion,” Dlamini alleged. He said the neighbours then called the Police, Fire Emergency Services personnel as well as Paramedics. However, he said nothing could be rescued from the house, despite the prompt response by the fire and emergency personnel.
Police Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Khulani Mamba confirmed the incident. He said the matter was reported to the police and they were still investigating the cause of the fire.
