MBABANE – Minister of Education and Training Wilson Ntshangase has said Regional Education Officers (REOs) should deal with head teachers who demand top-up fees.

This comes amid an outcry from parents of a certain school in Manzini which called parents and guardians last week and told them to pay for some money because the school’s operation were grounded due to a crisis that had gripped the school.

Guardians complained because the Minister of Education said vulnerable pupils should not be forced into paying extra money on the fees paid by government on the basis that they were vulnerable; hence they did not have money.

“That’s the obligation for the REOs to deal with such matters. The issue of top-up fees was discussed and finalised that it should cease to be demanded,” the minister said.
Ntshangase repeated his previous statements that the money offered by government to schools was enough to run the institution.
He wondered how the vulnerable could generate income to pay school fees since they were destitute?

“Head teachers are defying the ministry because the matter was long concluded and finalised,” he said.
The minister urged parents to report the matter to REOs so that they deal with the head teachers who continue to demand top-up fees.
