BIG BEND – Ubombo Sugar has donated E4.1 million to various schools and developmental organisations around the Big Bend area.
The exact amount donated by the sugar producing company is E4 125 681.

Making the donation while at the company’s main offices on Friday afternoon, Managing Director (MD) Oswald Magwenzi said one of the pillars of the company’s strategic intent is to be welcome in the communities in which its operates in.
He said despite the company facing many challenges in the sugar markets, it remained committed to continue making a contribution to education and development in poor areas around Big bend.
Breaking down the donation, Mangwezi said E2.5 million would go to the three schools which are supported by the company.
These include Sisekelo High School and U-TECH.

He said a further E1 million had already been spent on consultants helping small holder farmers in the LUSIP area to access donor funding for irrigation.
He said the remaining amount had been used to purchase 12 sophisticated computers with touch-screen monitors which were presented to four schools around Big Bend.
The schools which received the computers are; Majombe Primary, Mahlabaneni Primary, Mayaluka Primary and Ndzevane High.

On top of the computers, the company further donated 40 monitors to the aforementioned schools.
After presenting the computers to the representatives from the various schools, Mangwezi stressed the importance of education saying education is the only vehicle which can transform the country out of poverty.
“It is through education that the potential of a child is realised. In the digital age we live in today, computers are at the heart of everything we do. The late Nelson Mandela once said; education is the most important weapon to change the world,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Vusi Sukati the Deputy Head teacher at Ndzevane Primary said he was grateful to the company for not only donating to company schools but to other rural schools around Big Bend.
He said the donation would go a long way towards improving the quality of education in rural schools around the area.
