DRUGS, DAGGA WORTH E6M DESTROYED IN PIGG’S PEAK
PIGG’S PEAK – The police Anti-Drug Unit destroyed pharmaceutical drugs and dagga worth about E6 million in Pigg’s Peak yesterday.
Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Inspector Khulani Mamba confirmed the drugs destruction. Mamba said the drugs consisted of cannabis and pharmaceuticals that had expired.
The pharmaceutical drugs and dagga had been collected and combined from all the regions of the country and some of the drugs were exhibits of cases that were finalised in courts of law.
Mamba detailed the destruction and said: “The 4 932 kilogrammes of cannabis that was destroyed had a street value of E1 972 777.60.
“There were 47 guilty parties who were subjected to the long arm of the law for possessing cannabis illegally. There were also pharmaceuticals were worth E4 million which were confiscated from pharmacies. They had expired but the pharmacies were still selling them to the public.”
Mamba explained that the police had partnered with other stakeholders. He said the drugs were seized last year in October during a joint raid by the police, Ministry of Commerce, Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA), Swaziland Standards Authority (SSA) and the Ministry of Health.
He said 13 pharmacies were closed.
To witness the destruction was Pigg’s Peak Magistrate Simangele Mbatha. She highlighted that the purpose of the destruction was to ensure that the work the police and Judiciary did was executed to the end.
