3 INJURED DURING MARULA FESTIVAL
NDLANDLAMENI - The marula festival at Prince Logcogco’s Chiefdom ended on a chaotic note as a skirmish ensued where three people were injured and rushed to hospital.
The ceremony was held on Saturday at Ndlandlameni Chiefdom. The skirmish ensued while the people were preparing to leave and involved a group of about 20 youth members from the area.
Information gathered from some of the witnesses who saw the fight when it started, the bone of contention was that some herdsmen let their cattle into the others’ maize fields.
“The men started confronting each other inside the Royal Kraal but were calmed down by the elders. They then challenged each other to go outside the Royal Kraal. When they were outside they started assaulting each other with open hands, fists, sticks and knobkerries,” the source said.
He said the skirmish drew attention from other people who tried to intervene but failed as the people involved started throwing stones at each other. The source said some of the people involved in the fight ran to their homes armed with knives and spears among other weapons.
The source said a chase ensued as the other faction discovered that the others were armed with dangerous weapons.
He said they threw stones at them while running away. He said a number of people were hit by the stones and sustained injuries to their heads, body and legs.
“There were three people who were seriously injured such that they had to be rushed to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital. One of them was stabbed with a knife several times on the shoulders while the other was stabbed with a spear on the body.
“The third one was assaulted with fists, kicks, stones, sticks and knobkerries all over the body and was left lying unconsciously on the ground,” the source said.
It was gathered that one of them was transferred to Manzini Clinic where he was admitted while the other was still undergoing treatment at the RFM Hospital. The source said the third victim was discharged yesterday.
Ndlandlameni Indvuna Sibhakela Mamba confirmed the incident. He said a number of people were injured and three of them sustained serious injuries such that they had to be taken to hospital.
He said they were still investigating the matter.
He said those who were involved in the skirmish would be fined by the chiefdom.
He said the matter was reported to the police and some of the injured people were taken by members of the Royal Swaziland Police to hospital. The Indvuna also said he had not heard of any arrest thus far.
