MBABANE – A hawker has been arrested in connection with the death of her husband.

The 56-year-old Bachazile Mamba of Mpolonjeni is alleged to have injured her husband Aaron Nkonde of Maduma following an argument.
According to Nkonde’s relative, who chose to remain anonymous, the incident happened near the market stall that the deceased runs next to the shops at Maduma. He said his brother sustained a wound on the side of his head and was rushed to the Mbabane Government Hospital. This was in the evening of February 9, 2014.

The deceased’s brother said when the incident happened none of the family members were present. He said they were still in the dark regarding what the two argued about before his brother was injured.
“We are not sure what exactly took place there since none of us were there. My brother got injured on the side of his head and we suspect that he might have been hit with a hard object or fallen hard on a hard surface. It happened at around 6pm. As for whether they were in the habit of fighting or not, it is difficult to say since all couples engage in arguments from time to time,” he said.

Nkonde is said to have been rushed to hospital minutes after the incident and he remained in a coma for over a month. His brother said he was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he regained consciousness. His brother said Nkonde died on Tuesday after being in hospital for nearly one and half months.

He was employed as a driver in one of the companies at Sidwashini Industrial Sites. The two were said to have been traditionally married. However, no children were born of the marriage. Mamba has children who were born out of wedlock. She was arrested on Tuesday by members of the Royal Swaziland Police. She has since been charged with culpable homicide. She appeared before Magistrate Ndumiso Shongwe yesterday. The suspect was represented by Noncedo Ndlangamandla from Mabila Attorneys.

Ndlangamandla indicated that she would move an application for bail on behalf of her client at the High Court. Mamba has been remanded in custody until  Thursday pending committal to the High Court. According to the charge sheet, Mamba ‘unlawfully and intentionally assaulted Aaron Nkonde by pushing him onto planks that had nails inflicting upon him certain injuries which caused the death of Aaron Nkonde and negligently killed the said Aaron Nkonde.’

In another matter, a teenager has appeared at the magistrates court having been charged with attempted murder. The 19-year-old Linda Ndwandwe of Makhwane allegedly committed the offence on Sunday in his home area. Ndwandwe is alleged to have stabbed Senzeni Maseko once in the stomach inflicting a near fatal wound from which he nearly died.

He appeared before Magistrate Shongwe yesterday and had no legal representation. It is reflected in the charge sheet that the intention to stab Maseko was to kill him.  He has been remanded in custody until Thursday pending committal to the High Court.
