MBABANE - In what could be termed as a rare occurrence in Swaziland’s wildlife preservation, poachers have hunted and killed a rhino at Mkhaya Game Reserve.
The poachers removed the horn of the rhino.

The rhino was killed about three days ago and Big Game Parks, the country’s main custodian company of Swazi game, has put forward a reward of E50 000 cash, to anyone with information that would lead to the apprehension and conviction of the poachers.
Kathy Wright, Conservation Secretary at Big Game Parks, said this was a sad moment for the country.
She said it was the first time a rhino was poached at Mkhaya Game Reserve in 23 years.

However, two rhinos were lost to poachers in 2012 at the Hlane Royal Park.
This was an incident that broke a record of 20 years, during which there had been no rhino poaching in Swaziland.
Wright said it was disturbing that the poachers targeted the country’s rhinos which were well protected in the country.

“It is a senseless calamity to kill a rhino just for its horn,” she said.
Wright said her organisation had managed to keep rhinos safe in Swaziland through fully applying the might of the Game Act.
She said the Act provided very stiff sentences for offenders.
Wright said anyone with information on the poachers of the rhino at Hlane should call George Mbatha at 7604 3867 or the Poaching hotline at 7650 0501.
They can also call the police hotline 999.

I want to see statistics on how many poachers were killed in order to save them. http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21528836.200-animals-are-conscious-and-should-be-treated-as-such.html#.Uy8qg_ldUjE

A real tragedy and a painful blow, not only to those who love rhinos and risk their lives to protect them, but to all who cherish our natural heritage. Let's hope that this appalling act will strengthen the nation's commitment to protecting this wonderful resourc
