TEACHER SUSPENDED FOR CARRYING GUN AT SCHOOL
LOMAHASHA – A male teacher at Nkalashane High School has been suspended after he was allegedly found in the school premises carrying a gun.
The teacher was suspended by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) on November 5 last year and slapped with 12 charges.
He will be named once he has appeared before the TSC.
This was after the school Head teacher Ambrose Nyoni had laid a formal complaint to the Lubombo Regional Education Officer (REO) Wellington Mdluli.
According to the charge sheet, which was shown to the Times, the teacher contravened TSC’s regulations by allegedly bringing a gun to school on February 4 last year.
“You are charged for contravening Regulations 15(i) (c) and (j) of the Teaching Services Regulations as read with Regulation 17 of the Teaching Service Regulations of 1983 and Section 36 (a) and (b) of the Employment Act of 1980 in that:
“On the 4th of February 2013, you brought a gun to school, and when the head teacher warned you that it was illegal to carry such a dangerous weapon to school, you boasted by saying you were licensed, hence you could carry it anywhere,” reads part of the charge sheet.
Absented
On top of this charge, the teacher also faces a charge of misconduct in that he allegedly absented himself for 25 days last year.
He is also charged with shouting unpalatable words to the head teacher and refusing to attend a department meeting.
He is also facing a charge of refusing to conduct an English Language oral examination which he was supposed to conduct from September 9, 2012 to October 12, 2012.
Other charges include refusing to sign a time book which all teachers at the school are expected to sign when they arrive in the morning, conducting an unauthorised meeting, and being disrespectful when called by the head teacher to address matters regarding his school work.
When sought for comment, the teacher confirmed his suspension but asked not to comment on the matter until he appears before the TSC Disciplinary Committee for a hearing.
Meanwhile, attempts to get a comment from TSC Deputy Executive Secretary Ncamsile Mntshali were unsuccessful as her phone rang unanswered when called several times over this past weekend.
Nyoni, the school head teacher, was also not comfortable talking about the matter as he hung up when this reporter called him on Saturday.
