NEW YEAR, FRESH OPTIMISM AND FRESH START

Day seven of 365. The year is already in full flow and with it comes the customary hive of activity that we usually associate with this time of year. Businesses and companies resuming operations and schools looking to do the same in the not too distant future, this period is demarcated by busy-ness on all fronts of our society, as everyone seeks to have their affairs in order while staying in the race against time and deadlines.
The first month of the year is a bit of a weird one, especially considering how swiftly it follows the festive euphoria and has a completely different set of engagements that require a totally different mindset. It really sits uneasily with me. However, it is how it was made to be. I think that is where the challenge lies for us going into a month like January; we face more of a psychological battle when it comes to adjusting to this very rapid change so much so, that it has the potential to become a ‘banana-skin’ in our bid to get set and psycho-emotionally composed to get the year started off on the right foot.

The main and probably most overriding theme that is usually associated with this month is that it comes with a lot of stress, emotional strain and psychological ‘warfare’, brought about by the different aspects of life that we have to sort out and contend with. Financially, many people tend to experience their worst state, solely because of the number of expenses and the sheer volume of responsibilities that many people have to cater for; for both themselves and those in their care.

As a result, this weighs heavily on their mental health especially if in some cases, they are not totally able to cover for those needs in any way, shape or form. The main perpetrator is usually one of a financial kind and a cause for concern is when the effects of this begin to trickle down and seep into that individuals’ mental health to destabilise it. It is for this reason that there needs to be a degree of planning and calculated spending, that wholeheartedly needs to go into preparing for the beginning of the year in a genuine bid to avoid intensely stressful situations that may culminate into mental health breakdowns. A new year also means new goals; which means new strength to pursue new goals and finish off old, unfinished ones. Many people see the start of the new year as a source of fresh enthusiasm which they can use to complete goals they may have started and not finished. This also, on is its own is a tax on an individual who may be seeking to improve themselves, academically, career-wise or otherwise and because of that it may seem a heavy task on its own that takes up the individuals’ mental health.

Mental

As we embark on a clean-slated year, we need to remain conscious of the fact that this is indeed not only a busy time, but also one that tends to exert more mental pressure than many understand. There are a plethora of ways in which this mental pressure comes about and upon understanding this, we are able to make a conscious set of decisions that can help avoid this.
Looking forward, it is paramount that we take into account everything going on in our personal lives and what we sense as overwhelming, we trim and adjust to fit into a healthier, more psychologically adept lifestyle. Send comments to: runsford0505@gmail.com
