LOZITHA – One had to be at Lozitha Palace yesterday to believe it was really happening.

South Africa’s football heavyweights Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will, for the first time in recent times, compete in a four-team tournament against local sides.

The tournament, the King’s Super Cup, will feature the South African gladiators against local giants in red and white glamour side Mbabane Swallows and police ensemble Royal Leopard. During the tournament’s pre-launch at Lozitha Palace yesterday afternoon, the two South African teams were represented by Irvin ‘Iron Duke’ Khoza (Pirates Chairman) and Bobby Motaung (Chiefs Football Manager). Pirates Administrative Manager Floyd Mbele was also present, alongside a representative from Vodacom, which is the two teams’ main sponsor. The South African delegation met privately with His Majesty King Mswati III for a few minutes before they posed for pictures.

The tournament, which is expected to be played in a knockout format with the semi finals playing first to determine the finalists, will be officially launched soon.
Pirates’ Mbele, interviewed after the formalities, said they were aware that the tournament would generate a lot of interest but urged locals to be patient.

“The public will be informed in due course of the tournament’s logistics. There will be an official launch where the tournament’s draw will be conducted. There is nothing more to say at the stage save for the fact that both Chiefs and Pirates have agreed and confirmed their participation in the King’s Super Cup,” he said.
