’LANDERS SINKING TITANICALLY

My dearest readers ... If a picture is worth a thousand words then the sight of dejected Mbabane Highlanders players trudging off the pitch last Saturday at Mavuso Sports Centre like rhinos in urgent need of a root canal surgery neatly encapsulated the story of a traumatic season.

This was after exciting Moneni Pirates staged a remarkable come-back – from a 0-2 set-back to eventually win the exciting clash 3-2 and complete a double over the struggling capital city giants following the 3-1 first round win.

Believe it or not, Highlanders are lying on the ninth spot in the 12-team league, with three wins in 14 games played and by all standards, this is relegation form. Saturday’s defeat was a mind-numbing 7th of the season and they are only above rookies Tambuti FC because of a much better goal difference, never mind that it reads as a negative which means they have conceded more goals than they have scored. With the next fixtures against nemesis Royal Leopard, whose 3-0 first round defeat led to the unceremonious departure of former boss Bheki ‘Rubber’ Simelane, then Manzini Sundowns and Tambuti FC, their character will be tested to the fullest.

There is no iota of doubt that the Bull’s kraal is awash with quantity and a trickle of quality. I said this before in this state-of-the-nation sports address sometime back and some of the Bull’s numbskull fans tore into me with emotional words in smses and e-mails. They can believe their propaganda all they want but the truth is there for the world to see that Inkunzemnyama, once the standard bearers of Swazi football, once the undisputed kings, are only a pale shadow of their former selves.

The reality is that they are still having a prolonged dance with demotion and cannot afford another slip-up. After racing to a 2-0 lead against the in-form Moneni Buccaneers,  one expected Highlanders to hold on to their lead and secure the three points which would have eased the pressure which has been mounting all season.
