‘BIRDS’ NET E130 000 FROM AZAM MATCH
MBABANE – They just cannot stop breaking records and rewriting local football history books.
Gallant Mbabane Swallows attracted what appeared to be the biggest crowd for a CAF inter-club competition game at the Somhlolo National Stadium over the weekend, raking in close to E180 000 from gate collections.
Before the match was won, they had a 1-0 deficit to overturn from the away clash of the Total CAF Confederations Cup against Tanzania’s Azam a week ago. Perhaps that did the trick for them as Swazis had hope that at home it was possible and rightly so as Swallows won 3-0 to make it 3-1 on aggregate.
“The net collection after deductions was E130 000. This shows the support we got from our supporters and the nation at large as we saw the numbers at the stadium. Swazis and our fans came out to rally behind us and we’re very much appreciative,” the Umkhonto KaShaka CEO Sibusiso Manana said.
He continued; “Van Damme uvukile (translated to meaning Swallows are back from the dead) as the local football fraternity joked after they were booted out of the SwaziBank Cup by Matsapha United in the Last 16.
They had won 27 consecutive matches and drew one ahead of the Matsapha United clash and these included Botswana’s Orapa’s United in both the home and away Confederations Cup preliminary round clashes.
Worthy of note is that when Swallows lost to Matsapha United, nearly three thirds of the over 8 000 crowd celebrated but against Azam, these people put their domestic rivalry aside and celebrated Swallows’ success – patriotism at best.
