MEN’S 4X100M RELAY TEAM BREAKS 23-YR-OLD RECORD
MBABANE – It has taken 23 years and nine months for the country’s national 4*100m record to be broken.
The fastest man in the country, Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa was named alongside Mlandvo Shongwe, Sebenele Dlamini and Thandaza Zwane in the 4x100m relay to clock 39:75 seconds in Wednesday’s Athletics South Africa (ASA) Speed Series in Germiston. The achievement beats the previous 42:09 seconds set in June 23, 1993 by the quartet of Shaun Carmichael, Victor Shabangu, Ndumiso Mdziniso and Robinson Stewart.
Wednesday was a special day for the local athletics as Louis Mashaba, Andile Lusenga, Thandaza Zwane, Manqoba Nyoni and Mcebo Mkhaliphi also beat their own record in the 4x400m set last year during the African Championships in Durban. The quartet’s new record improved from 3:12:64 minutes on June 26, 2016 to 3:11:51 minutes on Wednesday.
The athletes are set to benefit from the Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) E1 000 incentive for every national record broken.
AAS General Secretary, Thoba Mazibuko said his association was pleased with the performance and will continue supporting the runners.
“They (athletes) have been dedicated and working hard and this reflects on the results. We also appreciate the job done by the coach Maxwell Nkabinde, the clubs, work stations and schools where the athletes come from.
They have been very supportive. AAS also thanks ASA, our South African counterparts for their support and partnership over the past two years, it has been phenomenal and special thanks goes to ASA president Aleck Skosana for driving the good relations,” Mazibuko said.
