NSIZWA GETS SAINSBURY MEDAL AT TWO OCEANS
MBABANE – Nsizwa Thwala of Zithande Athletics Club managed to bag a Sainsbury medal in yesterday’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town.
Thwala was representing the country as a brand ambassador for the continent’s most beautiful race main sponsors Old Mutual. The 56km Ultra Marathon has been ran around the Cape Peninsula since 1970.
The 48th consecutive Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon yesterday remained on the traditional route via Chapman’s Peak, Hout Bay and Constantia Nek. The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon is run under the rules of IAAF, Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Western Province Athletics (WPA).
Speaking from Cape Town, Thwala said he was happy with the achievement in his sixth Two Oceans Marathon appearance. Thwala has won four Sainsbury medals and two bronze in the previous years. Sainsbury medals are given to athletes who complete the 56km route in less than five hours and is half bronze and half silver.
gruelling
As in the past, the gruelling 56km run, alongside the 21km half marathon and the various associated trail and fun runs, draws sporting enthusiasts from across the globe to the scenic Cape Peninsula for a unique and trying athletic experience.
Inaugurated in 1970, the competition has developed into the biggest and most popular road race in the nation, with 11 000 runners taking part in the ultra marathon and 16 000 runners taking part in the half marathon each year.
During its 46-year tenure, the ultra marathon has seen over 50 South Africans (across both men’s and women’s categories) take the winning title, along with almost a dozen Russians, half a dozen Basotho and half a dozen Zimbabweans.
