SIHLANGU TO JOIN COSAFA CUP IN QUARTER-FINALS

MBABANE – After their sterling performance in the 2016 COSAFA Castle Cup, the national team, Sihlangu is through to the quarter-finals of the tournament without kicking a ball.


They are to face winners of Group B that comprise of Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Madagascar and Seychelles. The draw for the tournament, scheduled for June 25 to July 9 in North West, was held in Johannesburg, South Africa yesterday afternoon. 


For the first time, Sihlangu will start their campaign in the Council of Southern African Association (COSAFA) in the quarter-finals after winning a bronze medal in last year’s edition under Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga.


Sihlangu were seeded during the draw alongside South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. South Africa will face the winners of Group A that consists of Tanzania, Malawi, Angola and Mauritius.


Namibia will face Lesotho and Botswana were drawn against Zambia to conclude the quarter-finals.
According to cosafa.com, there are 13 out of the 14 COSAFA nations to will take part in this year’s edition, with only the Comoros Islands withdrawing their name from the draw hat.

They were replaced by Tanzania, who also competed in the inaugural tournament in 1997, as well as recently as 2015.
The four quarter-final winners carry on through to the Cup competition, while the losers enter the Plate tournament that was last year won by Namibia. South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe have each won four COSAFA Castle Cup titles since the tournament was first played in 1997, with Angola (three wins) and Namibia the only other teams to lift the trophy.
