MBABANE – Going all out to make the country proud in the continent has come at a heavy price for Mbabane Swallows.

The club, which is doing the country proud in the ongoing Total CAF Confederation Cup where it reached the group stages; the step to the quarter-finals, feels their own people and government have not supported them.

“It is as if for us it was a must to get where we are but when Royal Leopard did it three years ago, they were getting all the praise from all corners.

“We feel government and sponsors have disowned us,” Swallows and PLS Chairman Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze said as he expressed his disappointment at a press conference held at Sigwaca House yesterday.

Continuing on the matter, he said; “Why has government, sponsors and Swazis disowned us? Are they aware where we are is the big stage? Are they aware this is not about Swallows but Swaziland as they say outside and fly only the country’s  flag and that of CAF but not ours as a club?” he wondered.

He said everyone was silent about their success and they were not getting any assistance like their top Africa rivals, who are treated as national teams.
“Playing six CAF games cost us E2.5 million and each away game costs about E500 000, which makes the E3.4 million useless because it covers the debt we have already incurred,” he said.

He said if they had never won again AC Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), they would get liquidated in no time because they would not afford to even run the team and pay players’ salaries.
