MBABANE – An interesting race for the hottest seat in local football is on the cards. The list of the nominees from one of the NFAS affiliates, referees, is headlined by Shongwe’s name, who got a nod to race with the long-serving football head honcho, Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa.

The National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) is going to the polls during its general assembly on June 25. The NFAS Appeals Board suspended Shongwe  last month for a year after he was  found to have defied the country’s football mother body by successfully contesting for the Shiselweni Regional Football Association (SRFA) chairmanship while still serving in the supreme soccer body. He was said to have contravened the contentious Article 34.10 of the NFAS constitution, which disallows executive members to hold office within the member associations.

However, Shongwe is challenging his suspension in court.
Mthethwa, who has been in office since his return in 2005, has also been nominated following a vote of confidence from the Lubombo Regional Football Association (LRFA).
To qualify for presidency, a member should have served in the NFAS Board for at least one term (four years).

According to the classified list leaked to this publication, Sihlangu and Manzini Wanderers legend, Jerry ‘Mbazo’ Gamedze, has been nominated for the ordinary membership position.  Sabelo Kunene, who is in the National Referees Association of Swaziland (NRAS) leadership, is also a nominee in the same category.

The race for the vice presidency could be equally fierce. Well known regional chairmen, Comfort Shongwe, and Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane, are among the notable contenders, who are set to compete with the incumbent Nichodemus ‘Ace’ Mashwama.
The nominations are done by the eight members of the NFAS. Affiliates are the four regional football associations, Women Football, Premier League of Swaziland, referees and coaches.

Some members have finished doing their nominations and are expected to start filing their lists with the NFAS from early next week. Those that are still to nominate include Manzini Regional Football Association and SRFA.
NFAS Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe said he could not be drawn for comment on the nominations at this stage until the meeting of the executive committee to discuss the election issues by next Thursday (May 25). As per the NFAS constitution, the deadline for the proposals and nominations should be a month before the annual general meeting.
