MBABANE – Senseni Alie Mdluli and Sempai Cebsile Mthembu defied all odds to defend their titles in the KwaZulu Natal Provincial tournament.

The artists under the vibrant Sosai Kyokushin Kai Kan Karate Association (SKKKA) brought home six trophies after their sterling performance and winning in the finals. The tournament was held on Saturday at Melmoth City, KZN.

Sensei Mdluli was the defending champion in the open division and he defeated Mndeni Magagula from South Africa, to defend the title. They drew two times before Mdluli took the victory in the last two minutes extension of three bouts. Magagula had previously won the title but now Mdluli has taken over. Mdluli is a forth Dan black belt and he is due for grading before the end of the year, where he would then get the status of Shihan.

Sempai Mthembu was too strong for South Africa’s Princess in the women’s open division finals. The brown belt holder was the winner in 2016.
SKKKA Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mzwandile Ngwenya, said there were nine artists who travelled to compete in the tournament. Others who did well was Sensei Wandile Motsa, who was fourth while Sempai Melusi Simelane finished fourth in the Under-60 category.

“It was a great showing for the local aside. The standard during the tournament was high but we were able to come top and be the champions. Here at home we are working hard and we are hopeful that in the near future we will be the best in the region,” he said.
