SWAZI BASKETBALL ON THE RISE – SA COACH
KWALUSENI – South Africa’s top side Phoenix coach Molupe Thelejane has been left impressed by the growing standard of basketball in the country.
Thelejane led Phoenix in the recently ended Swaziland Invitational International Basketball Tournament (SIIBT) held over the past weekend. Jozi Nuggets were crowned champions in the men’s category after beating a vastly improved Harare City Hornets, while Club Ferroviaro de Maputo emerged winners in the ladies section, beating Costa do Sol during the SIIBT main day on Sunday at University of Swaziland’s (UNISWA) Ligcabho LemaSwati Sports Emporium.
He said he was impressed with how Swaziland is pushing for the second level in his three levels he used to classify the standard of the game in the region.
“Mozambique and Angola are obviously on the first level where they play fast and efficient basketball with South Africa and Zimbabwe on the second level. I’ve watched all the Swazi male teams and was impressed with how the standard is improving. As it is, Swaziland is pushing to be on the second level, away from the likes of Lesotho and Malawi on the third one,” Thelejane noted.
He said tournaments like the SIIBT are good for countries to gauge their progress against their regional counterparts.
