MBABANE – Bishop Steven Masilela set the tone with a verse from Proverbs 19:17.

“Kindness to the needy is like loaning the Lord, and he will reward the lender.” It was a perfect message in line with the historic launch of the 16th edition of the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup which was held at the Mbabane Government Hospital Outpatient Department on Saturday. The launch ceremony graced by Deputy Prime Minister’s representative Dumisani Ndlangamandla who is the substantive Minister of Information Communication and Technology, acting Minister of Sports Owen Nxumalo, Winnie Magagula who stood in for Minister of Health Sibongile Ndlela-Simelane.

There were football officials, players and staff from both SPTC and Mbabane Government Hospital as the latter received a cheque of E825 924.12 for the refurbishment of Ward 12, a popular male ward at the hospital.
The DPM, Cabinet  ministers, football officials including recently re-elected FA President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa, PLS Chairman Victor Gamedze showcased their painting skills on a portion of the ward’s wall.
The money will go towards fixing the toilets, showers, fixing broken windows, mending the dilapidated ceilings and flooring.  They will also buy new and modern television sets for patients to watch.
SPTC Managing Director Petros Dlamini said the partnership with the hospital was part of their social responsibility as a corporation.

He implored other companies to partner with the hospital on the upliftment of the services.
“We had wanted to adopt Ward 18 which is a female ward, but the minister advised us two weeks ago that they have since preferred to take the project to Ward 12. We did not oppose and we hope that the patients will like it,” he said.

DPM said the gesture was in line with government’s priority in health and urged other companies to emulate SPTC. The programmes include video conferencing between the facility and other hospitals countrywide. Yesterday the dignitaries witnessed a video conference with Matsanjeni Hospital.

The slashing of the voting exercise in the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup, did not pose any financial effects as the competition raked in enough to benefit the needy.
As a result, 10 organisations excluding the Mbabane Government Hospital have benefitted from the tournament where the SPTC has forked out a total E1.6 Million in proceeds. Ten organisations will share E800 000 while about E825 924.12 for the refurbishment of Ward 10.
