MBABANE – CAF has suspended FIFA-accredited referee Thulani Sibandze with immediate effect.

The lanky referee, who manned an African Nations Championships (CHAN) second leg qualifier between Zimbabwe and Namibia on July 23, was adjudged to have erred in allowing one of the penalty kicks to stand. Zimbabwe had won the game, which was played at Harare National Stadium, by 1-0 but lost 4-5 on penalties. Also caught up in the mess is assistant, Petros Mbingo, who assisted Sibandze during the game.

After the Namibians successfully converted their first two spot-kicks, controversy erupted when one of their players, Dynamo Fredricks, stepped up to take the visitors’ third spot-kick.

Fredricks embarked on his run-up and then just before striking the ball, completely stopped as he feigned his shot.

Zimbabwe goalkeeper, Herbert Rusawo, then committed himself to his right, and with the advantage of knowing where the goalkeeper had chosen to move, the Namibian coolly rolled the ball to the other side.

Following the incident, this publication reliably gathered that the duo was suspended in all football activities pending an ongoing investigation. They were further ordered to write an explanation letter by CAF.
