NKONYENI – National road races champion Muzi Shabangu could not have a dream debut in the main race of the Inyatsi Nkonyeni G2G Mountain Bike (MTB) Classic.

After winning the 35km event in the past year, the gifted youngster upgraded to the 65km race on Saturday, but was unlucky on the trails. He missed the route and ended up finishing on an unusual eighth spot.
“I missed the route after the first 16km.
“I also couldn’t train well I was busy with my Form III mid-year examination,” he said.

Also in the same boat was seasoned cyclist and former Inyatsi Swazi Frontier co-winner, Sihawu Dlamini, who was ninth overall.
The route was altered a little bit, but the markings remained clear. The terrain remained challenging as the cyclists had to cycle on single and thorny trails as well as open hard roads.
Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for former national MTB champion, Sifiso Mhlanga, after surrendering the lead towards the end.
“It was tough, but the event was good practice for a stage race I would join in South Africa on Tuesday (tomorrow),” said the 21-year-old.
Mhlanga missed an opportunity to win the race for a third time in a row.
