MBABANE – Boxers have left the country with renewed vigour ahead of a preparatory tournament in South Africa.

Led by seasoned coach, Fanana ‘Tyson’ Dlamini; four pugilists left for Springs outside Johannesburg yesterday to honour an invitation from Sun Rise Boxing Club. The event will be staged today.
The boxers, who are preparing for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, were confident of leaving a mark following mixed fortunes during the last stop in Springs last month.

The boxers in the team are 2010 Zone VI (now Region V) Games gold medallist, Thabiso Dlamini, and the equally forceful Sithembiso Mkhwanazi, who has featured prominently in regional tournaments. Others are the gifted duo of Phumlani ‘Slow Poison’ Shabalala and Zweli Dlamini, who appeared twice in regional youth games.

Thabiso, who competes in the 69kg division, said the event was providing a platform to perfect his punches, especially aggression.  His strength is defence.
“I’m happing with the preparations so far, so I’ll give it my best shot in South Africa,” said Thabiso.

Mkwanazi, ‘Slow Poison’, and Zweli, who are in the 60kg, 52kg, and 56kg divisions, respectively, also said they were in good shape ahead of the event.
Meanwhile, the coach said the boxers were responding well to training, thanking the National Olympic Committee for the continued support.
“We’ve been in training for months and our preparations are headlined by the stop at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria for fitness test recently.
“After the tournament on Saturday, we’ll stay for a few days at Transnet Boxing Gym,” said ‘Tyson’.

The final team to leave for Australia for the Commonwealth Games will be announced in due course.  The event is set to start on April 4.
