THE FAST AND FURIOUS KOLA STOPS MATSAPHA

MANZINI – There were jubilant scenes at the Mavuso Sports Centre, as referee Mbongiseni Fakudze blew his final whistle to confirm Manzini Wanderers’ 1-0 win over Matsapha United.
It was a sight reminiscent of a team that has won a cup final.
Who would blame the ecstatic ‘Weslians’ family for such a priceless victory against a team that has gone nine games undefeated since gaining promotion to the top league?
Talk of a victory attained through sheer determination and hard work in what was an equally engaging affair enjoyed by the 1 500 fans.
It was Wanderers’ trusted servant Aladian Kola, no doubt one of the best imports in local football in terms of efficiency, who punished his preseason suitors.
The match had a couple of desperate penalty appeals on clear ball to hand incidents from both teams; two from Wanderers and one from Matsapha United which the referee rightly denied.
However, he should be guilty of not awarding Sabelo ‘Sawa’ Gamedze a deserved one; nine minutes from time, after he was clearly upended inside the box by instinctive defending of Lihle Shabangu just when he was about to deliver a cross into the six yards box.
The Nigerian forward was a man on a mission in the first 25 minutes of the game, which his team dominated with impunity. Scoring inside the first minute after a sweeping move engineered by right winger Sicelo Junior Simelane, ended with Kola controlling at 16 yards out before slicing a shot past goalkeeper Khanyakwezwe Shabalala.
