MZIMPOFU – Royal Swaziland Police (RSP) shottists have shot to the top in the Army Commander Cup, for a third time in a row.

A team styled RSP A combined to fire an unmatched total score of 943 points during the tournament, to pocket the E2 300 first prize money. Familiar ‘ghosts’ Dumisa Bhembe, national champion, Nhlanhla Sithole, Bongani Sihlongonyane and Phinda Mlambo again made firing at the marked target from seven, 10, 15, 20 and 25 metres to look easy, with an average score of 235 apiece at Mzimpofu Shooting Range, outside Manzini yesterday. Ranking second was RSP B that produced a surprise champion in the individuals ‘category. Muzi Ngwenya, who shot a ‘golden’ score of 239, as well as the trio of Sibusiso Magagula, Josefa Bhembe and Mduduzi Nkambule, represented the team. They finished on 927 points.

The runners-up had to shake off third-placed Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) team A, who were a point behind. Meanwhile, there were more surprises in the individuals’ female category, as Xolile Mbingo from USDF returned to snatch gold ahead of favourite, Gugu Gwebu, with 225 points. In the non-security forces division, the most accurate team was made up of debutant, Etienne Sales, Musa Simelane, Sipho Mavimbela and Sifiso Langa. Swaziland Shooting Vice President, Josefa Bhembe, noted an improved standard as he highlighted that scores below 200 out of a possible 250 were hardly recorded these days. Also making his remarks was Army Commander representative, Shaka Fakudze, who shared guns safety tips. The tournament was launched in 2014 with a sponsorship of E10 000. The purse has since increased to E30 000.
