SITEKI – MTN Khemani’s Muzi Shabangu did not only win the 10th edition of Siteki Road Classic but managed to defend it in a classic style.

Shabangu, who started off low, struggled to keep up with the pacesetters during the first and second lap of the 120km race.
He had to engage his next gear with 30km to spare to win the annual race at an impressive time of 3:18:19 hours.

He managed to shrug off his team-mate, Sabelo Mngometulu, who led the better part of the race only to surrender it in the last lap. Mngometulu had started off strongly as he opened an unassailable gab only to finish fourth in a time of 3:21:34 hours.
Coming second was Dig Deep’s Gcina Banda who clocked at 3:18:23 hours while MTN Khemani cyclist, Mduduzi Zwane, completed the top three bracket on a time of 3:21:17 hours.

Speaking after winning the race, Muzi Shabangu said he was not that fit because he had not trained for almost a whole month.
“I was struggling to even finish the race but determination and passion for this sport helped me to win the race. I am happy to defend this race although it was not easy. I am hoping that I will do better in the Commonwealth Games next year in April. Before the race, I ate oats and bread pasted with butter and I also took an energy drink,” Shabangu said.

Carol Preat was the only candidate in the female category who participated in the 120km.
“The first 90km was manageable but then the last 30km was tough. This is why it took me so long to finish. I timed myself and it took me 4:24:00 hours. I am hoping to improve my time if I get to represent the country in the Commonwealth Games next year as I have been shortlisted,” Preat said.
