MBABANE – SOCGA will use sport as a tool of bringing awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS through social media and other channels.

As tomorrow marks World AIDS Day, the Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association has lined up a week-long educational campaign styled Red Ribbon Week on top of commemorative festivities at Coronation Park in Mbabane on Saturday, starting at 10am.   According to information circulated on SOCGA’ s social media platforms, the event is aimed at reminding the public that there is still a vital need to increase awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education on the subject, among other things. “The Together for HIV and AIDS prevention - a tool kit for the sports community, will be used as a reference material on this campaign,” reads the statement in part. SOCGA will partner with the National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS (NERCHA), a group of Limkokwing Semester V Public Relations students and the Mbabane Municipal Council during the event.

The theme is, ‘Using Sport as a Tool against HIV/AIDS.’ Activities for the day will include boxing, HIV/AIDS quiz, and target throwing. “On this day, we are targeting orphaned children from the Swaziland Association for Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation of Offenders (SACRO),” further reads the statement. Meanwhile, the risk of HIV transmission in the sports field is minimal. Most HIV positive athletes have contracted the virus outside of the sports arena. However, the transmission can still be minimised by enforcing the wearing of sports equipment like gum guards, shoulder pads, proper footwear and helmets, among other things. How to minimise the risk of HIV transmission on the sports field?
