ALL I WANT FOR XMAS: ‘BIRDS’ VERSUS ‘WESLIANS’ CUP FINAL

Dear Father Christmas ... Fiery columnist Guy Hawthorne, writing in Saturday’s Citizen, insinuated that they had found your remains – or the remains of St Nicholas, at least – and I was left wondering if that meant you wouldn’t be delivering any gifts this year.

For the life of me, I cannot profess to have been good throughout 2017 – even though I think I fared better than the traumatic 2016 in which I lived through the thinnest threads of life on a hospital bed throughout – but in case those archaeologists were mistaken in their identification of you and, of course, provided I have made your list of those souls deserving of a present, there is only one thing I would like. A Mbabane Swallows versus Manzini Wanderers Ingwenyama Cup final!

I know I am asking for too much. Wanderers, for all their vast improvement under the tutelage of coach Nyanga ‘Crooks’ Hlophe, are as consistent as the Mbabane City weather while Swallows, for all their unbeaten run and dominance, are currently like a badly tuned luxury car. Wanderers’ inconsistency can put many pregnant women’s morning sickness to shame. Swallows’ attacking forays have the lightning speed of a tortoise!

But with all due respect to the other six teams who have made it into the quarter-finals of the richest tournament in the land, is there a way, Father Christmas, you could give us a Mbabane Swallows versus Manzini Wanderers Ingwenyama Cup final in early 2018?
You see, by asking for something this vague when there are still two more stages to play, I am leaving you with quite a few questions.

There is a huge likelihood that the country’s two fiercely contesting sides, Swallows and Young Buffaloes – who are tied on everything in the MTN league right now; wins, draws, goals for, goal against, goal difference and points – could contest the Cup final again like they did early this year in the second edition on February 5.
