SOCGA TABLES E7.4M BUDGET
LOBAMBA – The Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (SOCGA) yesterday tabled a E7 438 689 budget for the current financial year.
The organisation’s Treasurer Zakhele Zulu, presented the budget which includes up to E6.4 million in revenue expected from Solidarity Programmes, Solidarity Administration, ANOCA Activities and the Commonwealth Games Federation.
This means that athletes should brace themselves for a busy 2018, with the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games from April 4-15, ANOCA Youth Games, Olympic Youth Games and Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games among others in the pipeline.
SOCGA is also hoping to make E42 000 from their base, OlympAfrica and is expecting at least E600 000 from government through the Swaziland National Sports and Recreation Council.
Outgoing SOCGA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Muriel Hofer brought to the delegates’ attention in yesterday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the OlympAfrica Centre in Lobamba, that 2017 was the first year of the 2017-2020 quadrennial.
She noted that qualification to games and selection continues to become more challenging but thanked national sports associations for their assistance in streamlining and improving processes.
“As we move into the second year of the Tokyo Olympiad, we can reflect on the key successes of the 2013-2017 strategic plan and the lessons that will help us ensure our athletes continue to succeed,” she said.
Hofer highlighted that SOCGA was now moving towards decentralising its operations and it will soon be giving responsibilities to sporting codes in managing programmes and finances submitted and approved by the association.
