NEARLY E500 000 AT STAKE FOR ‘SWAZI BOLT’ IN IAAF INDOOR

MBABANE – Close to E0.5 million is at stake for sprinter Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa in the IAAF World Indoor Championships.


The winner of the 60m and other events in the championships billed for Birmingham, United Kingdom will take home a lucrative E440 000 (US$40 000).  Matsenjwa left the country yesterday for the United Kingdom for the competitions starting tomorrow.
The prizes are reserved for the first to the sixth finishers. Matsenjwa qualified for the indoor championships after his sterling performing during the qualifiers held last month.


He goes to the competition with a national record of 6:88 seconds while the best time ever clocked in the 60m is 6:34 seconds by Christian Coleman from the United States.
The runner-up will take home about E220 000 (US$20 000) with the third finishers receiving E110 000 (US$10 000). The prize breakdown was released by the International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) ahead of the four-day championships.
“A total of E27 104 000 million (US$2 464 000) is on offer from the IAAF as prize money at the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018.


“There is also a US$50 000 bonus on offer for any athlete setting a world record during the four-day championships,” quoted IAAF website.
All awards are dependent upon athletes undergoing and clearing the usual anti-doping procedures.
