MBABANE – The National Sports Awards have been deferred. The awards, which are meant to recognise and motivate excellence in sport, returned in the past year.  Swaziland National Sport and Recreation Council (SNSRC) CEO Darius Dlomo announced a decision to put the event on hold to focus on producing more elite athletes.

He was speaking during a press briefing at his offices at the Industrial Sites in Mbabane yesterday.
Dlomo told the media that the event would return next year and focus this year was on increasing the dwindling figures of elite athletes in the country.

“We feel we have to focus on youth athletes development to avoid giving the awards to the same individuals each year.
“From now on, the awards will be held after two years,” said Dlomo.

Meanwhile, the operational plan and budget for grooming the junior athletes are being fine-tuned. Part of the money will come from the over E10 million share from government.
“Our elite athletes will not be left out, as they benefit from the National Olympic Committee,” said Dlomo.

The awards were held late in October last year and some companies came on board in support of the festivities.
The shrewd sports administrator, on the other hand, thanked Their Majesties for the revised budget for sports. The sports associations’ mother body got an extra E4.9 million, as compared to the past year. Dlomo reiterated that the extra money was for funding Team Swaziland in major international assignments that include the Region V Under-20 Youth Games in Botswana in December this year.
