MBABANE – The Manzini Wanderers brand cannot be dragged through the mud.

That is the statement the club has come out to make concerning the kidnapping and assault of a renowned foreign inyanga (witch doctor) in the football circles last Sunday.

While the story published by this newspaper on Tuesday made no mention of any club related to the incident, generally it pointed to the losing side in the SwaziBank Cup final, which was Wanderers and the club has made it known it was aware of the speculation.

“The directors of the club have tasked me to clarify on the issue of the kidnapped inyanga story as published on Tuesday. As Manzini Wanderers we distance ourselves from the incident. We are a big brand and do not engage in such. That, we have also made clear to the victim who we met as a club to clarify our position,” the club’s CEO Pat Mahlalela said yesterday.

He said they discussed the matter with the affected party and he was also clear about their position as a club in as far as this matter was concerned.
“We’ve heard that our name is being linked to the incident but we are not a part of it. We also feel sorry for him for what happened but he is clear that we have nothing to do with it but a brand to protect and grow,” he said.

Questioned if they had no issues with the on-going police investigation, he said they did not talk about that because for them, it was only about the team and nothing more or less. He said the law will take its course but the club maintains it had no role in the whole thing.

The inyanga was reportedly kidnapped during the SwaziBank Cup final between Wanderers and Buffaloes which the later won 2-1, assaulted and left in the wild tied to a tree by purported football fans who wanted him to give them the spell to win the final but in vain.
He told his kidnappers that he had already worked with another team and had already won the match.
