MBABANE – A war between a 2.5-metre black mamba and Congofire Shabangu lasted for two hours in Mehlwabovu.
Mehlwabovu is under Nkwene Constituency in the Shiselweni Region.

The battle is said to have started at around 2pm and ended around 4pm.
The snake, according to Shabangu, is said to have emerged from a banana field and slithered straight to where the man was seated, preparing his emahiya (traditional attire).
Upon seeing the snake, Shabangu, who is a former member of the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF), ordered his wife to take the children to safety.
Afterwards, Shabangu ran into a nearby house where he was hoping the snake would not draw nearer.

Upon entering the house, the snake is said to have entered through a window and rushed straight to the man, who had no option but to take his gun and fight it.
Neighbours revealed that they heard gunshots and went closer to the Shabangu homestead and saw for themselves the battle.

Others are said to have discouraged him from fighting the enraged snake but he continued because he thought if he left it alive, it would attack him.
When Shabangu was called to give his side of the story, he revealed that he almost died when fighting the snake. Shabangu said it was the second time being attacked by the venomous and poisonous snake. He said the snake could be the reason why he could not see some of his chicken and dogs.

When asked about calling the police for safety, he said they allowed him to kill it because it was a matter of survival.
“It was very tough for me and to be honest, I was on the verge of death. I had to fight it because if i did not, it would come back and bite my family. As a man, I had to stand up for my family and fight for them,” he said.
