‘WE WANT BONUSES’
MBABANE – Money makes the world go round. This rings true to Mbabane Swallows, who are facing an exodus of players.
A majority of the senior players are threatening to quit the team for greener pastures as they felt they were owed their bonuses as they got little from what they were promised end of the season.
The team that faces Tunisa’s Etoile Sportivo du Sahel on July 17 at Mavuso Sports Centre has not recorded a full house in their preseason training, as some senior players only started training yesterday while they were expected on Monday.
A majority of the senior players did not show up during the MTN League prize presentation held on Tuesday at Royal Villas as only a few came, who included the player of the series Mandla Palma, defenders Sanele Mkhweli and Stanley Umukoro.
The players who preferred to talk on condition of anonymity, in fear of victimisation, confirmed that they were not given what they had expected in terms of bonuses.
“Every player has a right to look for greener pastures, especially after the team failed to keep its promises. We were not given what was promised to us and that has caused confusion among us,” said one player.
“We won the Ingwenyama Cup, MTN Premier League and Swazi Telecom Charity Cup. We also reached the group stages of the CAF Champions League but still our bonuses were far from what we got last season when we played in the CAF Confederation League where we also reached the group stages,” said one player.
Earned
The team earned E9 860 000 last season with a large chunk coming from the E6.6 million for reaching the CAF Champions League group stages, E1.2 million from Ingwenyama Cup, E1.1 million for being MTN Premier League champions, E950 000 for SwaziTelecom Charity Cup and E10 000 for reaching the last 16 of the SwaziBank Cup.
