ANTI-DOPING WORKSHOP FOR ANOCA-BOUND SQUAD
MBABANE – The road to the Association National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) 3rd African Youth Games has already begun for local athletes.
This follows an anti-doping workshop which was held yesterday at the Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (SOCGA) involving the seven athletes and four officials to travel to Algeria for the games from July 18-28.
The workshop was chaired by St. Mark’s High School deputy head teacher and anti-doping tutor Innocent Cindzi.
Cindzi said the importance of the workshop before they leave for Algeria on Sunday was to enlighten the athletes on anti-doping.
“We are sensitising them on the importance of clean fair play. Whenever they win they need to be proud that they achieved it through their efforts. We are aware that there are athletes who cheat, take drugs to win which we discourage. We emphasise on the importance of a balanced diet and thorough training,” Cindzi said.
The multi-international sporting event will be held at the 5th July Stadium, Algiers in Algeria. They are held every four years.
The inaugural edition was held in 2010 in Morocco while the second edition was held in Botswana.
Out of the 35 sporting codes, local athletes will only take part in three sports and these are athletics, swimming and taekwondo.
The local squad, which is composed of seven athlets will be led by Swaziland Taekwondo Association’s (STA) Zakhele Dlamini.
The athletes include Bongumenzi Mbingo and Khanyisile Hlatshwayo, who will partake in athletics. Others are Liam Emmett, Robyn Young who are the country’s top junior swimmers and the trio of Melusi Lukhele, Sikhulile Mahlalela and Nhlakanipho Gwebu who will partake in taekwondo.
They will also be joined by coaches Bhekinkosi Tsela, Welcome Nhlabatsi and Manqoba Motsa.
