MBABANE – Sprinter Thandaza Zwane has set a new national record in an unusual sprint event, 300m in Liege, Belgium.

The Correctional Services athlete, who is in Belgium for a training camp, clocked 33:03 seconds to finish fifth in the event of seven athletes. The winner was Belgium’s Robin Vandersbemden on 32:81 seconds, while Jonathan Borlee was second on 32:81 seconds.
He confirmed that it was a national record and was happy with his performance. “I was running the 300m for the first time competitively and I believe I did well,” he said.

He set the 300m national record last Wednesday. Zwane, who is also the national record holder in 400m, again was back on the track on Saturday in Heusden where he competed in 200m, finishing fifth on 21:09 seconds.

Zwane will fly straight to Nigeria next week from Belgium. In Nigeria he will compete on August 1 in the 400m. He went to Belgium to prepare for the 21st CAA African Senior Champions, where he will be part of the seven athletes to represent the country.

“My training programme is going well and the weather is good for training here in Belgium. I have been forced to withdraw for another competition in Luxemburg due to the fact that it is too close to my 400m in Nigeria,” he said.

Zwane said the competitions in Belgium have given him the idea of what to expect in Nigeria. He said he was competing with the best athletes in the world and some will even be part of the African Senior Championships.
“I’m getting good quality competition here as top athletes have attended the training session and the competitions. I’m ready for the African Championships since I ran a good time in the 300m,” he said.
Zwane is currently the best athlete in sprints together with Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa, who will also be travelling to Nigeria. The others are Phumlile Ndzinisa, Mcebo Mkhaliphi, Erika Seyama and Andile Lusenga.
