Eswatini U-17s .........0

MBABANE – The national Under-17s outfit have been derailed in their bid to conquer the region following a demoralising 0-4 loss to Angola yesterday.

After the 3-2 win over Zimbabwe in their opener last Friday, Velekhaya Mthethwa’s troops needed to avoid defeat against the Angolans in the Group C encounter to remain in pursuit of a semi-final berth.

As a result, Angola secured a semi-final spot with a game to spare, as they also beat Malawi by 1-0 in their opener.
The tournament is taking place in Mauritius.

Only one team from each of the three groups makes a cut, but Eswatini can still qualify as the best runner-up, if they beat Malawi in their last game. In the best runner-up race, the country is currently third behind Zambia and Mauritius.

According to a correspondence from COSAFA, it was the duo of Domingos Andrade and Jose Cabingano, who shattered the Eswatini junior’s side dream of shining in the tournament, as they scored during the rout.

In an earlier game yesterday, next Eswatini opponents Malawi sent Zimbabwe packing from the tournament with a 5-0 victory.
Meanwhile, the 2018 tournament has added significance, as it serves as a qualifier from the southern Africa region for the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be played in Tanzania next year. Only the winners will get a ticket to the continental football showpiece in East Africa.
