SA SIDE PULLS OUT OF ‘XAVI’ DEAL
MBABANE – Green Mamba winger Mthunzi ‘Xavi’ Mkhontfo’s dream of joining ambitious South African National First Division side Stellenbosch FC is up in smoke.
The former Eswatini international passed trials at the Cape Town-based ensemble (formerly Vasco da Gama) over a fortnight ago. The deal is now off following fruitless talks between the two sides over transfer fees. Classified information leaked to this publication revealed that Stellenbosch were willing to pay only about E70 000 for a loan-fee, but the green and white ensemble reportedly wanted about five times more.
Stellenbosch General Manager Garth Le Roux, in an interview, confirmed pulling out of the deal, but did not give reasons for the latest developments.
Green Mamba CEO Thami Phakathi said he was not aware of the latest decision, saying the last time he checked talks were underway.
“I’m not aware of the latest developments. I know that talks are still ongoing and we’ll issue a statement between tomorrow (today) and Monday,” he said briefly.
Meanwhile, ‘Xavi’ joined Green Mamba during the second round of the past season. He had spent two seasons at DR Congo giants AS Vita. He featured for Green Mamba in last Saturday’s EswatiniTelecom Charity Cup play-offs. His strength, agility, speed and stamina were on point on the day.
